Dan nu een opbeurend verhaal, op deze donkerste dag van het jaar, als Seth het gevecht tegen Horus in de ochtend al gewonnen lijkt te hebben.

Het lijkt, zoals elke 21 december, alsof De Zon vandaag gestorven is en de koning van de duisternis gewonnen heeft. Samson is zijn haren - zijn kracht - kwijt en de rots van Sisyphus ligt onderaan de berg.

Het komt weer goed! Na een periode van drie donkere dagen kunnen we weer vieren dat de dagen zichtbaar langer worden. Om op 25 december de wedergeboorte van De Zon te bewonderen moet je in de ochtend naar het oosten kijken. Om het punt van zonsopkomst precies te bepalen moet je eerst de drie middelste sterren in de ring van Orion vinden. Deze worden de drie koningen genoemd. Trek een rechte lijn door de drie koningen en Sirius, de ochtendster. Het snijpunt van deze lijn en de horizon snijdt markeert de locatie waar De Zon op komt. Het sterrenbeeld maagd staat dan bovenin de hemel.

(Dit punt is vandaag de dag niet meer accuraat. Vanwege precessie ligt het anders dan bijvoorbeeld 2100 jaar geleden.)

Drie maanden later staat De Zon alweer hoog in de hemel, Zijn licht leidt ons wederom door de vallei der duisternis. Samson krijgt zijn haren weer terug en de rots van Sisyphus is alweer halverwege de berg. Horus verslaat Seth. De dagen worden weer langer dan de nachten.

Meestal zijn het wilgen, berken, platanen of andere zinloze soorten.

Nooit zijn het appelbomen, perenbomen, kersenbomen, pruimenbomen of walnotenbomen.

Soms vind ik dat jammer, maar meestal zit ik er niet mee.

5-'deurs'

Soms vraag ik me af waar bepaalde begrippen vandaan komen. Neem bijvoorbeeld 5-deurs en 3-deurs auto's.

In het buitenland heten dit soort auto's coupés of hatchbacks. Hier klapt de ruit mee als je de achterklep open maakt, in tegenstelling tot de sedan (4-deurs).

Op mijn basisschool heette de directeur Ton, wat de eerste verwarring veroorzaakte.
Later bleek een ton ook 1000 kilogram te betekenen. En weer later 100.000 gulden.

Lastig.

Wat blijkt: In 1839 is het gewicht van de zilveren gulden verlaagd van 10,766 gram naar 10 gram. 100.000 × 10 gram = 1000 kg.

De Romeinen hadden eerst nog tien maanden (omdat ze tien vingers hadden, dit was makkelijk tellen). Later hebben ze er twaalf maanden van gemaakt, naar de twaalf sterrenbeelden. Januari en Februari zijn toen toegevoegd.

Zeitgeist: 'Moving forward' review

Zeitgeist: Moving forward is another great documentary. Their analysis of our current economic model is brilliant.

I don't agree with everything in it though. As in the previous Zeitgeist documentaries, they go a step too far. A few drawbacks:

- The revolution they propose at the end is simply not going to happen.

- Science and efficiency have it's drawbacks when it comes to food. Growing livestock in the most efficient manner doesn't take into account the welfare of the animals. Genetic manipulation of crops has been a scientific breakthrough, but has made us moving away from nature further and further. I feel that 'playing God' is the wrong thing to do, but I lack the time to prove it scientifically.

- The cradle to cradle concept is completely ignored. You can also buy products that are 100% recyclable, or even upcyclable.

- A utopia is presented that assumes the new world can be build from the ground up. Something that will only happen after a third world war, or comet impacts. It's a pity, since 'Moving forward' suggests a new path from our current position.

Instead, I would have liked to see some logical steps to reshape the world into one that makes sense. Some suggestions:

Step 1: Recycle everything
When you recycle 100% of the products you use, the earth's resources will last a lot longer. This will generate jobs and won't impact the current system too much.

Step 2: Food & Lifestyle
Many of the current diseases are due to unhealthy food and lifestyle. All food should be biological again. Abandon artificial colors and flavor enhancers. Also, make tobacco ten times more expensive to discourage smoking for the youth. I know the economy gets a lot of money from the early lung cancer-related deaths, but the new society should be about welfare - not wealth. Promote physical exercise.

Step 3: Birth control
Though our planet might be able to house 10 billion people, it would be a nicer place if there would only be 5 billion. The city that's presented in the Zeitgeist utopia can probably house millions of people in universally shaped apartments. Very efficient, but the question is: do you want to live in a zero atmosphere space?

Step 4: No More War
It should be forbidden for anyone to profit from war. Though it's a simple new law that every sane person should agree with, the people currently in power will heavily resist this.

Step 5: Abolish interest
This will be the hardest part, and only the beginning of the enormous economic reform necessary. But the current system - poor people pay interest to the rich people - is just very, very wrong. It has to change.

For English readers: this is a story about me participating in the world's longest relay run. Funny translation here

Bij het voorbereiden op rondjeNL, voornamelijk rennen in de kou en de regen, heb ik mezelf vaak genoeg afgevraagd waarom ik in godsnaam 'ja' heb gezegd op de vraag of ik mee wilde lopen. Achteraf is het een van de mooiste ervaringen van m'n leven.

Team 1 startte bij de Domtoren in Utrecht. Het team waar ik in zat reed door naar de Knardijk, tussen Zeewolde en Harlingen. Vanaf daar zouden we gaan lopen richting Zwolle. We hadden een schitterend uitzicht en er was geen wolkje aan de lucht.

Zestig kilometer later kwamen we aan. De organisatie had duidelijk haar best gedaan een zo mooi mogelijke route uit te stippelen. Ik ging heel lekker, liep gemiddeld tegen de 13 km/u en genoot vooral van het mooie landschap. Bij aankomst begon het al te schemeren en het andere team nam het van ons over. Wij reden door naar een plaatsje onder Hoogeveen en moesten proberen te slapen. Slapen in een rijdende camper terwijl je net hebt hardgelopen is ongeveer net zo moeilijk als het klinkt.

Vroeg in de nacht werden we wakker gemaakt. Team 1 kwam aan en had het duidelijk zwaar gehad. In de koude nacht waren ze een paar keer omgelopen.

Wij begonnen in dezelfde koude nacht maar zagen het langzaam licht worden. Het werd ook steeds warmer. In het vroege ochtendlicht werd ik tijdens het rennen verrast door een wild hert dat over het weiland naast me voor me uit huppelde. Een supermooie ervaring.

Vlakbij Assen werden we weer na 60 km afgelost. Het was toen licht en het kostte me weer moeite om te slapen. De spieren waren wat stijver maar de fysio's/masseurs verrichtten topwerk. Het rennen ging nog steeds lekker.

De volgende etappe werd een stuk zwaarder. In het begin ging het nog goed, maar de aanhoudende tegenwind in de uitgestrekte polders van Groningen en Friesland maakte dat m'n gemiddelde snelheid zakte onder de 12 km/u. Toen de waddenzee in zicht kwam besefte ik pas wat voor idiote afstand we al hadden afgelegd.
Hoewel het qua conditie nog prima ging, kreeg ik aan het eind langzaam last van een aanhechtingspier bij m'n knie. Ik ging kortere stukjes lopen. Bij aankomst vlakbij Ferwerderadiel kon ik alleen nog maar strompelen en dacht ik dat het voorbij was.

Ik ben toen nog op wonderbaarlijke wijze opgelapt. M'n knie werd ingetaped waardoor ik aan de nachtelijke loop bij het begin van de afsluitdijk kon beginnen. Ik begon toen met kortere stukken, en fietste stukken tussendoor om m'n spieren warm te houden. Lopen over de afsluitdijk 's nachts was heel apart; je loopt met je lichtvest aan naar een met allerlei lampen verlicht busje dat je al vanuit de verte ziet. Het leek beter te gaan met m'n knie, en bij het eind van de afsluitdijk dacht ik langere stukken aan te kunnen. Daar ging het toch weer mis, en leek het bij iedere stap alsof er iemand met een hamer tegen de zijkant van m'n knie aan sloeg.
De pijn kon ik verbijten, alleen lukte het toch niet om normaal te blijven lopen. Ik ging onbewust compenseren met m'n andere been, waardoor ik 'scheef' ging lopen. Bij de zoveelste keer starten zakte ik direct door m'n linkerknie heen. Het was alsof er iemand met een mokerhamer tegenaan sloeg. Ik wilde doorlopen (zeg maar doorhinkelen), maar de rest zag dat het niet ging en heeft in overleg met de fysiotherapeuten besloten dat ik niet doorkon.
Op die ene verdomde spier na wilde alles in me nog door, dus het viel me heel zwaar om te stoppen.

De rest van het team heeft me toen opgevangen bij het eind van de een-na-laatste etappe en de laatste etappe (van ons team), terwijl ik andere taken verrichtte zoals fietsen, navigeren en zorgen dat de andere renners genoeg eten en drinken. Ik heb diepe bewondering voor manier waarop de rest van het team heeft geïncasseerd. Dit geldt uiteraard ook voor het andere team.

Bij aankomst in Vleuten heb ik meegefietst met alle lopers, die afwisselend liepen en fietsten. Onder politiebegeleding zijn we over de busbaan via de Vleutenseweg naar de Mariaplaats gegaan. Vanaf daar is iedereen die mee heeft gewerkt aan het realiseren van rondjenl naar de finish op het Domplein gerend. Het zal een combinatie zijn geweest van het enorme publiek dat aanwezig was, het gebrek aan slaap en de pijn in m'n knie bij het rennen, maar ik had tranen in m'n ogen toen ik over de finish kwam.

Ik wil tenslotte, last but not least, iedereen bedanken die me heeft gesponsord en aangemoedigd. In totaal hebben jullie 500 euro gedoneerd aan stichting Doe een Wens. Zonder jullie had ik het niet zo ver gered!

At the end of a Youtube movie, you get suggestions for other movies. I really don't get the empty Youtube stars next to them. They're totally useless.

Why is it so hard to put the actual rating there? Am I the only one who sees this? There are a billion people using the site, right?

You might buy a small house in the south of Italy and start writing the book you always wanted to write. Maybe you'd move to Bolivia and build a vineyard. Start a restaurant. Become a surfing teacher. Whatever.

Or would you rather continue your current job, and instead own a mere 0,058% of Twitter, which is valued at 1,7 billion dollars.

I'm not a financial expert, but my gut feelings tell me that Twitter is somewhat overvalued. Twitter doesn't even know how to monetize yet.
Maybe it's a sign of the next web-bubble, or maybe I'm just not smart enough to understand the valuation.

In a very interesting article, Peter Schiff talks about how at some point, Yahoo was worth twice the entire country of New Zealand; every stock they had, all the real estate.

He asks: "What would you rather own, Yahoo or this entire country?"

Iberia complaints

Iberia is the worst airline I've ever flown with. My flight was from Amsterdam to Sao Paulo in Brazil and back, with stopovers in Madrid. The flight to Madrid was fine, despite some limited leg-space. But the 23.30 plane to Sao Paulo wouldn't take off. An hour later, we were all told to get into busses that took us to a - really nice, but who cares - hotel in Madrid. I went to bed at around 1:30. I had breakfast at the hotel early in the morning. They wouldn't give us any lunch vouchers in the afternoon, because we already had breakfast. Our flight would leave at 14:30, which meant a delay of 15 hours. I therefore missed my connection in Sao Paulo.

After a really nice time in South America, I had to fly back to Amsterdam.

I wasn't surprised the return flight was also delayed, for 3 hours. In Madrid, I barely made it to the gate for my connecting flight to Amsterdam - I was on time. However, Iberia thought I wouldn't make it so they already sold my seat to someone else. My luggage would be put on the next flight, which was 4 hours later.

A woman at the information desk told me I could get some refund at iberia.com. I filled in a form on that site but nothing happened. A few weeks later I emailed them again, again no response. Not so much the delay, but them not responding makes Iberia the worst airline I've ever flown with.

On the plus side, being in South America for 5 weeks was absolutely amazing!

Sites that use Gravatar

Every time I create a profile on a site, I upload my profile picture. Now I have a problem. Why? I want to change it.

Unfortunately, my picture is present on delicious, stumble upon, flickr, twitter, google groups, gmail, skype, github, hotmail, yahoo, wakoopa, facebook, hyves, last.fm, deezer, blogspot, yammer, vimeo, youtube and lots of other sites.

I only want to change my profile picture once, not 20-30 times. Why don't all these sites use the same one? It's possible, the solution is called a gravatar. It's a profile picture coupled to your email address, and the only way to fight the huge profile-picture-redundancy currently present on the web.

To my knowledge, github and wakoopa are the only sites on previous list that accept gravatars. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Please tell me there are lots of other sites that use gravatars as well.

Transparent png in ie6, with positioning and repeat

This has been the best thing for web developers since Firebug.

Like many others(*), I didn't think it was possible to have transparent png images show nicely in IE6. That is, if they had the position or repeat attribute set. But now, Drew Diller has made an incredibly nice javascript function that does the trick. Implementing it is a walk in the park. IE6 is a browser launched in 2001. In internet terms, it's ancient. Google did barely exist when they developed IE6. In the past 11 years, browsers have innovated with incredible speed.

Save time
Time equals money. Webpages in Firefox 3 load faster. Moreover, they can make a shortcut for every search field. So instead of going to http://www.wikipedia.org/ and typing in 'searchterm' in the search field there, they can just type w 'searchterm' in your address bar.
In Firefox 3, a smart search history shows up under their address bar when they type in a part of the address (or the title!) of a previous website, so they don't have to type in the entire address.
Also, instead of having their taskbar cluttered with instances of IE6, they have several tabs in one window.

Security
IE6 is one of the least secure browsers on the market these days. The only reason your network is not infected with all kinds of viruses yet (if it isn't) is because your brilliant system administrator has a good firewall installed.

Plugins
This is where the true power of Firefox comes into play.
Using the delicious plugin, your employees can store links and share them with whomever they want. A simple social network of useful web resources.

You can install the adblock plus plugin so they won't see those annoying flash banners. They get less distracted as well, which makes them work more efficiently.

The sexiest plugin for Firefox is Cooliris. Viewing images and videos on the web will never be the same. You have to see it for yourself.

Right now you probably say: this is all very nice and you're absolutely right. But our company is too big for such a change and we don't have the time/money to install Firefox.

You are wrong.

Twenty years ago some companies were wondering whether they should switch to using computers instead of pen and paper. Similar arguments were used not to switch (our company is too big, it's too much trouble). Look where they would have been now.

And then again: installing Firefox (it's free) is not that hard. Maybe your system administrator will even do it in his spare time because he dislikes IE6 as much as web developers do. You can even run it next to IE6 if you want to. Right now, keeping your 11-year old browser keeps costing you money.

Hyves herontdekt! Hyves is namelijk meesterlijk in het verzamelen van data. Nu werken flickr, twitter en blogspot ook goed samen met facebook. Ideaal, aangezien de individuele applicaties superieur zijn aan hun equivalenten op de sociale netwerken zelf.

Een mooi voorbeeld van de macht van het individu. Een collega van me had iets besteld via een Duitse webwinkel, en niets ontvangen. Uiteindelijk heeft hij via de politie in Duitsland zijn geld terug moeten krijgen.

Hij heeft hier vervolgens een blogpost over geschreven, die nu de tweede hit is als je de bedrijfsnaam Google't. Blijkbaar was hij niet de enige met problemen.

Nu zijn er een hele hoop mensen die op die manier naar een website gaan (de naam Googlen en vervolgens op de 1e link klikken, in plaats van de naam direct in de locatiebalk in te voeren). Die mensen vinden nu onder de officiele bedrijfs-site de link "Fa. GSTW: Betrüger / swindlers / oplichters!".

Two days ago, I launched http://getcoffee.at/?, a random name picker.

You can create a group which you can always access though a fixed url. For example, http://getcoffee.at/topteam It lists the names of the members of the team. You then click on the "Who?" button to decide who has to get coffee (or perform any other task).

Nice information for developers: the site is developed in Ruby on Rails, and ironically it was developed on actual rails, in a train between Utrecht and Amsterdam.

Unlocking the samsung c450

I received my free samsung c450 phone this morning (including camera and fm radio - it's amazing!). Unlocking it without a cable should apparently be a simple process:

1. Turn on the phone without sim card.
2. Pull off the battery cover and insert any non-accepted sim card (without turning off the handset)
3. Do full reset *2767*3855# , phone will reboot and go to Menu.
...

However, after the reboot the screen just shows:

GPRS Dual Band

I'm afraid I'll have to get a cable to unlock it (or wait a year, but then I'll already have my iPhone/Android powered phone). If anyone has solved the unlocking of the Samsung c450, please let me - and another 500.000 Dutch cheapskates - know!

Ode aan de NS (Dutch)

Na snowboarden, schaatsen, fietsen en lopen vind ik reizen met de trein de beste manier om mezelf voort te bewegen. De mooiste treinreis die ik ooit maakte ging van Ella naar Kandy in Sri Lanka, met een uitpuilende boemeltrein die extreem traag door een prachtig landschap trok.

Zo ben ik vorig weekend met de gele rups naar Sneek gegaan, een drie uur durende reis door een stuk niemandsland dat ook Nederland heet. Laptopje erbij, heerlijk. Als er stroom en internetverbinding zou zijn zou ik er zo m'n kantoor van maken.

De verbinding tussen Utrecht en Amsterdam is ook super, iedere dag de files voorbij knallen, om de tien minuten vertrekt er een trein. Zelden vertraging.

Soms, heel soms, zit het wel tegen. Gisteren was bijvoorbeeld zo'n dag. De nachttrein van 1.17 vertrok een half uur te laat uit Amsterdam, om vervolgens in Hilversum tot 3 uur stil te staan. Dan baal je.
Vertraging met de trein voelt als een kater na de drank.

Gek genoeg vergeet ik die vertragingen al snel, dus morgen naar Parijs. Met de trein (omdat je Utrecht-Parijs niet kan snowboarden).

Three days ago, NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) published a factsheet that WTC7 collapsed because of the fires. [link]

I'm so glad they finally did this. When I saw WTC7 collapse, I immediately noticed that it went down because of the fires. All those people who claimed that it was brought down by controlled demolition are now proven wrong by the very honest people of NIST.

(And yes, so what if WTC1, WTC2 and WTC7 are the only steel-structure buildings ever to have collapsed as a result of fire. There is a first time for everything.)

to ~/.zshrc

Because it's _extremely_ annoying when your backspace doesn't work.

I've turned off my voicemail. A few reasons:

- I rarely listen to them.
- I'll call you back anyway.
- I don't like leaving messages to voicemail myself.
- Once you hear the first second of 'Hello, this is my voicemail', you've already called me for a minute. Telecom providers round it up (yes, it's evil).

I encourage everyone to do the same. That is, if you don't forget to call me back.

IE6 on Vista

We're all working on Macs in the office. Most of our clients (all large corporations) are still browsing on IE6. Which is bad. We - still - have to test websites in IE6.

So we recently bought an HP laptop. It has Vista pre-installed. Legal downgrading to Windows XP is not possible, because we don't have an expensive version of Vista. I thought there would be an easy way to install IE6 on Vista, but the only way is on a virtual pc, which we can't download because we don't have an expensive version of Vista. Yes, it's the second time you've read that.

I guess we'll have to format our hd and install Windows XP with both IE versions...

In case any Rails developer needs a radio button with an Ajax call attached:

Associations in ActiveResource models

As we are building a Rails based application that depends on multiple REST-based services, we are faced with the fact that associations such as :has_many don't exist in ARes models.

We're currently thinking of implementing this, since it would be extremely cool to be able to call project.users, where User is a REST based service.
